Mechanical Engineer – CAD & Engineering Support (f/m/d) at Focused
Focused is hiring a Mechanical Engineer – CAD & Engineering Support (f/m/d) in Darmstadt, Germany. On-site.
About Focused
Focused Energy is a company developing laser fusion technology to commercialize fusion power, building on the ignition breakthrough achieved at NIF. The company is also developing NeoLyte, a compact laser-driven radiation source (LDRS) that integrates MeV X-rays and fast neutrons in a modular system for non-destructive inspection of shielded materials, with applications in nuclear waste analysis, contraband detection, infrastructure inspection, and medical isotope production. Focused Energy is establishing its first pilot facility in Biblis, Germany.
Mechanical Engineer – CAD & Engineering Support (f/m/d) job description
About Focused Energy
Focused Energy is an international deep-tech company based in Germany and the US, working to commercialize laser-driven nuclear fusion. Our mission is to provide clean, safe, and virtually unlimited energy to the world. We are rapidly scaling and looking for talented individuals who thrive in building clarity and structure within fast-growing environments.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Engineer – CAD & Engineering Support, you’ll produce high-quality mechanical models, drawings, and engineering documentation across Focused Energy’s projects. This is a hands-on role focused on translating design intent into accurate, well-structured CAD outputs that support manufacture, supplier engagement, assembly, and project delivery.
You’ll work across a range of technically demanding systems, including laser systems, vacuum equipment, diagnostic mounting structures, and facility mechanical infrastructure. Working closely with senior mechanical engineers and multidisciplinary project teams, you’ll provide practical design support while helping maintain consistent CAD standards, drawing conventions, and engineering documentation across the team.
What You’ll Do
Develop detailed 3D models and 2D engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor or an equivalent 3D CAD tool.
Produce manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, layout models, parts lists, BOMs, and drawing registers to a high engineering standard.
Maintain and update CAD models and associated documentation as designs evolve throughout the project lifecycle.
Support the design and development of mechanical systems such as vacuum chambers, laser system integration, diagnostic structures, and facility infrastructure.
Identify and resolve design clashes, interface issues, documentation gaps, and inconsistencies within CAD assemblies.
Prepare complete drawing packages and technical documentation for supplier quotation, manufacture, procurement, and design reviews.
Review supplier drawings and documentation, support the resolution of technical queries, and communicate design status and outstanding actions clearly.
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and systems engineers to support integration activities and maintain accurate assembly models.
Who You Are
You are a capable mechanical engineer who can translate design intent into accurate models, drawings, and structured engineering documentation.
You have a highly detail-oriented and methodical approach to CAD modelling, drawing production, and document control.
You can manage multiple drawing and documentation tasks across concurrent projects while maintaining quality and delivery focus.
You communicate clearly with senior engineers, suppliers, manufacturers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
You proactively identify design clashes, interface risks, incomplete information, and documentation gaps before they affect delivery.
You take ownership of your outputs and follow through on actions, revisions, technical queries, and design updates.
You are comfortable working in a collaborative engineering environment and adapting to different project disciplines and technical requirements.
You are committed to applying engineering standards, CAD conventions, and version-control practices consistently.
Desirable Skills & Knowledge
Experience with vacuum systems, chambers, precision mechanical assemblies, laser or optical system integration, or scientific instrumentation.
Familiarity with PDM or PLM systems, CAD data management, document control, and structured version-control practices.
Knowledge of design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA), supplier drawing review, prototype build support, and commissioning activities.
Understanding of GD&T and relevant engineering drawing standards, including ISO, DIN, or equivalent conventions.
Experience working in experimental physics, research, advanced engineering, or other multidisciplinary technical environments where mechanical systems must be integrated, manufactured, and tested.
