Product Owner - Device Team job description

Own the software that runs on every validator, ticket machine, and onboard unit millions of passengers touch every day.

We're looking for a Product Owner to take ownership of the backlog for Ridango's on-device application software, the Linux and Android-based software running on validators, ticket vending machines (TVMs), and onboard units. You'll turn customer needs and business goals into clear, buildable requirements that Engineering, QA, and Design can execute against, while working closely with the Hardware team who own the physical device, OS, and firmware layer.

You'll be the bridge between what the device needs to do (fare validation, ticketing flows, offline behaviour, backend integration) and what the Hardware team's platform can support.

What you'll do:

  • Analyse, refine, and document requirements into clear Epics and User Stories for on-device application software.
  • Own backlog readiness for development, clarity, priority, and feasibility (Definition of Ready).
  • Work closely with the Hardware team to understand OS, firmware, and hardware constraints, and flag where application requirements depend on or are limited by them.
  • Validate proposed solutions with customers, Application Specialists, and internal teams, including device behaviour in the field (offline mode, degraded connectivity, edge cases at the reader).
  • Support Engineering and QA with requirement clarifications throughout development and release cycles.
  • Flag scope gaps, risks, and dependencies early, including hardware/firmware dependencies owned outside your team — to Project Managers and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to estimation processes alongside Architecture and Engineering.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to keep requirements within agreed scope.

What you'll bring:

  • Strong analytical skills for requirements discovery and structuring.
  • Hands-on experience with Jira, Confluence, and documenting Epics/User Stories.
  • Comfort working with embedded or device-based software (Linux/Android), and understanding the constraints that come with software running on fixed hardware in the field.
  • Clear communicator, comfortable translating customer needs into actionable requirements for both application and hardware-adjacent teams.
  • Ability to balance customer requests with feasibility, capacity, and product strategy.
  • Collaborative, structured way of working within delivery frameworks.

Nice to have: familiarity with AFC/AVL device ecosystems or public transport ticketing flows specifically.

What we offer:

  • Work that matters, our software runs on devices moving millions of people daily across multiple continents.
  • A collaborative engineering culture where your input is heard and valued.
  • Experienced team leads and senior engineers to learn from and work alongside.
  • Room to grow in a company expanding internationally.
  • Competitive compensation package.
