Accountant job description

InterPayments is a San Francisco, CA-based, FinTech SaaS company sitting at the exciting intersection of payments and data intelligence. Our Mission is to empower merchants and the software vendors they use to lower payment processing costs. We create innovative data services that Fortune 1000 companies rely upon to lower fees by putting payments in competition on every swipe.

We empower dedicated team-first individuals who are driven to solve problems to foster innovation, perform at their highest potential, and make a meaningful impact - while creating meaningful relationships along the way.

POSITION SUMMARY

InterPayments Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Accountant to join our Finance & Accounting team. In this role, you will manage day-to-day financial transactions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general bookkeeping functions. You will play a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of InterPayments' financial records while collaborating cross functionally with internal teams and external partners.

We are explicitly hiring for an AI-forward accountant. At InterPayments, AI is not an optional productivity tool bolted onto the month-end close; it is how the Finance & Accounting function is expected to operate. The person in this seat will use AI daily to reconcile, validate, summarize, draft, and report. You will be measured in part on how much manual effort they remove from the function over time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounts Receivable (AR) - Invoicing & Collections

  • Review monthly invoices generated on the 1st of the month in QuickBooks Online (QBO), using AI-assisted checks to flag anomalies, missing line items, and variances against the prior period before invoices go out
  • Validate contract terms for newly onboarded merchants across multiple systems and source contracts; use AI to extract and cross-check billing terms (rates, minimums, ramps, renewal dates) against what is configured in QBO, the CRM, and in-house software
  • Follow up with merchants on outstanding invoices and manage collections
  • Ensure merchants are properly set up in CRM and in-house software
  • Partner with in house engineer and/or external parties to automate invoicing as the business scales
  • Take lead on customer renewals and executing to completion
  • Provide weekly updates on collections
  • Ad hoc reporting on revenue and collections

Accounts Payable (AP) - Ramp & Vendor Management

  • Review all incoming vendor invoices and accurately categorize them to the appropriate expense accounts; use AI to pre-classify and to flag categorization that breaks from historical treatment
  • Ensure invoices are reviewed and approved in a timely manner with respective vendor owners
  • Flag and escalate any material invoice amounts for review

General Bookkeeping

  • Maintain and update the month-end checklist and schedule, including accruals, prepaids, and fixed assets
  • Conduct bank reconciliations monthly
  • Manage fixed assets, including depreciation and amortization schedules
  • Manage the company’s virtual mailbox (Earth Class Mail), including AI-assisted triage and routing of incoming items
  • Draft first-pass variance commentary and close narratives with AI, then apply professional judgment before anything reaches the Controller
  • Monthly Sales tax preparation

AI & Automation (Core to This Role)

  • Use AI as a daily working tool across reconciliations, contract review, categorization, variance explanations, collections correspondence, and reporting. Not as an occasional experiment
  • Build and maintain reusable AI workflows: prompts, checklists, and repeatable procedures so that improvements persist beyond a single close cycle and can be handed to others
  • Leverage Claude to build interactive dashboards for partnership reporting, KPI tracking, and management reporting, and keep them current as the business changes
  • Identify and eliminate manual work: maintain a running backlog of finance processes that should be automated, ranked by hours saved and error risk reduced
  • Apply professional skepticism to AI output: every AI-assisted deliverable is reviewed, tied to source data, and owned by you. Speed never comes at the expense of accuracy or auditability
  • Document what you build so the function is not dependent on any one person’s memory, and so processes survive audit and team growth
  • Respect data handling standards: know what merchant, partner, and employee data can and cannot be put into which tools, and escalate when it is unclear
  • Share what works with the broader Finance & Accounting team and across departments. This role is expected to help raise the AI capability of the company, not just their own

Other Tasks

  • Update the monthly KPI dashboard
  • Provide timely partnership reporting leveraging Claude to build out interactive dashboards

  • Excel Experience – required
  • Claude (any other AI tool) - required

  • Solid understanding of GAAP accounting principles
  • Experience with month-end close processes, journal entries, and reconciliations
  • Familiarity with partner revenue share or commission tracking is a plus
  • Ability to leverage AI to improve workflows and output

COMPETENCIES & SOFT SKILLS

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Adaptable and solutions-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work cross-functionally across departments
  • High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
